It means "burnt cedar boards". It is an ancient Japanese wood treatment method, also known as Yakisugi.

For centuries Japanese and other cultures have been preserving wood by burning. Heavily charred surfaces give protection against sun, weather, insects and rotting. Fire brings out the beautiful texture of the grain.

Kais Wood combines old traditions and new techniques so that our clients could enjoy timeless design and long-lasting materials in Scandinavian weather.

Our most heavily charred product. A thick layer of char covers the board and serves as a natural barrier for weather and sun. It's the most similar to the traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban, which is known for its duration of 50+ years on facades.
